Are you eager to take command of your own professional learning? Are you tired of sit-n-get, irrelevant PD sessions that don't speak to who you are, and what you need, as an educator? If so, this course is for you.
When we talk about making shifts toward modern learning, we tend to focus on learning for students. But how often are the adults in schools afforded opportunities––and trusted–– to determine their own learning, time to connect with peers to collaborate, reflect, exchange feedback, and share practices with one another? In order to create Modern Learning experiences for students, we need to experience Modern Learning ourselves, as teachers and learning leaders in schools. This course will guide you through that very process––a process to craft your own personal learning plan aligned with your unique context, needs, interests and passions––in partnership with your peers.

Meet Linda Ashida
Linda currently serves as a Modern Learners Community Manager after retiring from a 33-year career in a suburban high school district in Illinois where she taught Spanish, and served as an Instructional Coach and District Coordinator for Teaching and Learning. She was one of the first teachers at her school to participate in a mobile 1:1 device pilot to connect her students to current and authentic resources and engage in conversations with native speakers of Spanish.
As a leader of professional learning, Linda founded Peer Observation Groups, a learning experience that connected teachers across disciplines in small groups to visit one another's classes and meet to reflect on their practice. Linda also led school-wide professional learning. She was a co-founder of her school’s first teacher-planned Institute Day, which became a tradition for many years. She also co-founded and led The Leader Learners Team, which connected teachers and administrators in monthly collaborative learning experiences.
Linda’s passion for building communities of learning reached beyond her school as well. She co-founded several district-wide professional learning experiences, including Virtual Learning Groups and Learning Exchanges, which leveraged new technologies (back then) such as Zoom and Periscope to connect staff across her district and beyond, in in-person and virtual class visits, and follow-up meetings to reflect and share feedback. Linda also designed and taught accredited university courses for the district’s Internal University, which included Differentiated Instruction, Instructional Technology, and Social Media for Learning and Leading.
Meet Mark Heintz
Mark Heintz is currently a social studies teacher in a suburban high school district in Illinois, and he served as a Divisional Technology Coach and Teaching and Learning Facilitator. In those roles, Mark formed coaching partnerships with over thirty teachers from every discipline in the school. Those partnerships worked towards common language and beliefs on teaching and learning. Furthermore, each coaching partnership involved students to ensure they were central to the learning environment and had a voice in the process. During Mark’s time as a Teaching and Learning Facilitator, he made the school’s professional learning transparent through a school blog that teachers and students reflected on to share with all stakeholders in the community.
In the past, Mark led a team of freshmen teachers in an iPad pilot that ultimately brought 1:1 devices to the entire school. He served as a member of the district’s Innovation and Change committee. Mark continues to partner with his students to create conditions that develop students as learners, have the flexibility to let them pursue their interests, give them the ability to make choices about how they learn best and expand their curiosity, while still developing the communication and analytical skills sets they need to be successful in their lives.
Linda and Mark established a strong learning partnership with one another 8 years ago, when they first connected in the Peer Observation Groups (POGS). They partnered in nearly all of the learning experiences described in each of their bios above, and their partnership continues to the present day in the Modern Learning Community.
